“The Goulas”

DISCOVER

The Tower of Nimborio

The name Goulas originates from the Turkish word ‘kule’ meaning castle. The most typical example of a
goulas, which survives to this day (though in poor condition) is in Emporio, on the left side of the castle.
Goulas was a multi-storey, rectangular defensive tower with thick walls, steel doors, battlements and
turrets. The residents of Emporio fled there, as a last resort, in case the castle was captured by pirates.

Architecture

The Goulas of Emporio is a monumental medieval four-storey fortress, now deserted for more than a century and on the verge of collapse. It is estimated that the tower was built somewhere between the 14th and 15th centuries, or even earlier. It is a unique architectural specimen of its kind, dissimilar to other towers on the island, but analogous to other massive fortified constructions, erected during the era of Venetocracy (13th to 16th centuries) in Patmos island and the Peloponnese.

History

The original landlords are unknown, but more recently (17th to 19th century) the tower was administered and used by monks of the Monastery of Patmos, which owned extensive land plots and vineyards on the island of Santorini. Goulas was abandoned close to 1880.
